Madame Grès- fashion icon

fashion icon

Born in 1903 in Paris, Madame Grès (Alix Barton) studied sculpting and painting. Most famous for her draping and finely pleated gowns, jersey and silk chiffon fabrics, her creations became pieces of art. Her innate ability to incorporate body and fabric with each other was unique and represented the true imprints of "Haute Couture". She never made sketches and used live mannequins to create her gowns.

Her list of clients included famous women like Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and Jacqueline Kennedy. After winning many awards for her great talent she was named "the greatest living couturier" in 1988 by Vogue History of the 20th century fashion. Unfortunately she died in 1993. Her death was kept secret by her daughter Anne Gres for over a year, making it public in 1994.

Today's fashion influenced by Mme Grès style.
